Meet EP Elephants rep, Siya Nzuzo
From the rugby fields of Makhanda to representing the EP Elephants, Siya Nzuzo’s journey is one defined by purpose and a deep understanding of the game beyond performance. As both a player and a MyPlayers representative, he continues to grow into a role that blends leadership and ambition.
Where It All Started
Siya’s rugby story began at Graeme College, where his passion for the game quickly took shape. “The sense of brotherhood and the feeling of belonging got me hooked right away,” he reflects.
Making his first team debut at just 16, he quickly progressed through the ranks, earning selection to EP Academy Week in his matric year, a milestone that opened doors to further opportunities. His journey then took him to the University of Johannesburg, where he became part of the Lions’ junior structures.
“That was when I realised rugby was more than just a game; it was about building a future and a legacy,” he says.
A New Chapter with EP Elephants
In 2021, Siya moved to the EP Elephants, a turning point shaped by perseverance through challenges. “Thando Manana took a chance on me and joining EP felt like a new beginning,” he explains.
Since then, he has embraced both the demands and opportunities within the squad, contributing to a collective vision. “I’ve been able to be part of something bigger than myself while testing my leadership and resilience along the way.”
Working under former Springbok coach Allister Coetzee has added another layer to Siya’s development. “His attention to detail and ability to simplify complex aspects have sharpened my tactical awareness,” Siya says. “He’s helped me see rugby not just as physical execution but as a mental chess match.”
Looking ahead, Siya’s ambitions are firmly aligned with the team’s goals. “I want to help bring silverware back to the province and push for promotion to the Currie Cup Premier Division,” he says. “Most importantly, I want to be a dependable presence in the squad.”
Leadership Beyond the Field
As the MyPlayers representative for the EP Elephants, Siya carries a responsibility he values deeply. “It’s an honour. It means my teammates trust me to be their voice and that’s something I don’t take lightly.”
His approach is rooted in understanding and advocacy. “I want to listen first, understand their concerns and aspirations, and then push for better systems, fair opportunities and long-term player welfare.”
Passion for Performance and Development
Siya’s academic background in Strength & Conditioning complements his rugby career and fuels his long-term ambitions. “I’ve always been fascinated by the science behind performance and movement,” he explains. “It allows me to merge my love for rugby with helping others achieve longevity and excellence.”
Having experienced limited access to such resources growing up, he is motivated to give back. “I want to help young players who come from similar situations and provide them with better opportunities.”
For Siya, education has always been a priority alongside rugby. “Rugby is unpredictable and having a degree ensures I can transition into coaching or education when the time comes. It’s about future-proofing my career.”
Continuous Growth
Still evolving as a player, Siya remains committed to improving key areas of his game, including scrummaging, aerobic conditioning and overall versatility.
Off the field, he enjoys a balanced lifestyle. “I enjoy spending time studying, building performance programmes and being around family and friends,” he says. “I’m also a bit of a foodie and enjoy experimenting in the kitchen.”
At the heart of his journey are strong personal values. “Integrity, trust, loyalty and the belief in giving more than you receive, those are the principles I try to live by every day.”
