Meet Valke player rep, Mihlali Stamper
From a young boy making his first tackle at De Vos Malan High School to captaining Valke, Mihlali Stamper’s rugby journey is one shaped by determination. Now serving as both team captain and MyPlayers representative, Mihlali continues to evolve, not only as a player but as a leader committed to the well-being of those around him.
Rising Through the Ranks
Mihlali’s love for rugby started early. “I remember making my first tackle at the age of 10 and from that moment I knew I wanted to play rugby professionally,” he says.
After school, he earned the opportunity to represent the Blue Bulls at U19 and U21 level. While the transition to the Highveld presented its challenges, it also built the foundation for his resilience. A pivotal chapter followed at the University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks), where Mihlali was part of a dominant side that secured back-to-back Varsity Cup titles in 2021 and 2022.
“Varsity Cup gave me great exposure,” he reflects. “It opened doors and ultimately led to my contract with Griquas.”
Finding His Home at Valke
Despite the opportunity at Griquas, consistent game time proved limited. A loan move to Valke initially offered a fresh start, but it quickly became something more permanent. “When my contract at Griquas ended, it was an easy decision to stay at Valke,” he explains.
“It’s a place where I’ve been able to enjoy my rugby again.”
Since then, Mihlali has embraced his role within the team, both as a player and as captain. Captaining Valke has added a new dimension to his game. “It’s made me see rugby differently. I’ve learned a lot about game management and leadership strategies.”
Goals and Challenges
Injuries have been a recurring hurdle in Mihlali’s career, limiting his time on the field. Now, his focus is clear. “My goal is to stay consistent and remain injury-free. I haven’t played more than five games in a competition due to injuries, so that’s something I want to change.”
Looking ahead, his ambitions remain firmly set on growth and progression. “I want to play in the Currie Cup Premier Division and hopefully get an opportunity to go abroad.”
Preparation is key for Mihlali. His matchday routine is built around focus and readiness. “I start with a gym session after breakfast to activate my body and get my central nervous system ready. Then it’s about making sure I have everything, my gear, energy gels and gum guard before heading into the game.”
A Voice for His Teammates
His leadership extends beyond match day. As the Valke MyPlayers representative, Mihlali has taken on the responsibility of supporting his teammates off the field. “It’s an honour to serve in this role. I enjoy helping others and it has taught me the importance of being a servant leader.”
This approach has strengthened his ability to connect with teammates and manage different personalities, an asset that has translated directly into his captaincy.
As a rep, Mihlali is committed to making a meaningful impact. “I want to help my teammates develop not just as rugby players, but as individuals. My focus is on personal growth and wellbeing.”
He sees himself as a bridge between the players and the organisation, ensuring their voices are heard. “I aim to represent my teammates with integrity and a positive attitude, being a reliable link between Valke and MyPlayers.”
Beyond Rugby
Off the field, Mihlali is just as driven. A BEd graduate majoring in Economic Management Science and Business Studies, he has plans to further his studies. “I’d like to continue studying and complete my Honours while playing.”
Away from academics, he enjoys spending time with family, watching series, reading and playing pool. In a surprising twist, he also has a hidden talent. “I’ve learned how to DJ, playing the decks is something I really enjoy, even though not many of my teammates know about it,” he says with a laugh.
At the core of Mihlali’s journey are the values that guide his life: respect and perseverance. “I believe in respecting everyone, regardless of their background and staying committed through challenges. I’ve faced a lot, both as a person and a player, but perseverance has carried me through.”
