Meet SWD Eagles rep, Kyle Cyster
Kyle Cyster’s rugby journey has been a story of steady growth and belief in his path, from university rugby through to the professional game. Now serving as a MyPlayers rep for the SWD Eagles, he’s focused not only on improving as a player, but also on making an impact off the field.
Humble Beginnings
Kyle first picked up a rugby ball in Grade 8 and quickly found his love for the game. By matric, he had worked his way into the school’s first team, laying the groundwork for his next steps. His move to Nelson Mandela University (NMU) proved key, where he progressed from res rugby into the Madibaz Sevens setup.
“From there, things started to open up,” he reflects. “I played Varsity Sports Sevens and then went on to represent NMU in the Varsity Cup and Varsity Shield for a few years.”
After completing his undergraduate degree, Kyle furthered his studies at UP-Tuks, where he completed both his honours and master’s degrees. It was during his final year that an unexpected opportunity arose.
“I got a call from Jacques Juries to play Currie Cup for the Griffons. That’s when I realised rugby could actually become a full-time career. Before that, I always thought I would finish my studies and follow a more traditional career path.”
A Defining Move to SWD
Following a successful stint with the Griffons, where he was part of a First Division Currie Cup-winning squad, Kyle faced a period of uncertainty with multiple offers that never materialised into contracts. It was then that SWD Eagles head coach Heineke Meyer reached out.
“He told me to trust him and I did,” says Kyle. “He’s been true to his word from day one. When I arrived, there were only a handful of players, but we believed in what we were building.”
That belief has since evolved into a shared mission within the squad.
“We’re not just playing to compete; we’re playing to win the SA Cup and restore pride in the SWD jersey and the city of George. It’s a special journey to be part of.”
Sevens Aspirations and National Dreams
While currently focused on the 15-man game, Kyle has a deep appreciation for Sevens rugby, having already tasted success at that level.
“Sevens tests you as an athlete in every aspect. Having had the opportunity to be part of the Springbok Sevens setup in 2024 is one of my biggest achievements,” he says. “I would love to get back there and represent my country again.”
For now, his focus remains on consistent growth in his current environment.
Leadership Through Representation
As a MyPlayers representative, Kyle embraces the responsibility that comes with the role, viewing it as an opportunity for personal and professional growth.
“I enjoy the responsibility. It pushes me to grow both on and off the field and to help create better situations for my teammates.”
His approach centres on communication and trust. “My goal is to fully understand the benefits available to players and then communicate that in a way that makes sense to them. I want to be a bridge between the players, the union and MyPlayers.”
Inspired by individuals like Thato Mavundla (MyPlayers’ National Relationship Manager), who transitioned from player representative to a full-time role within the organisation, Kyle has his sights set on a similar path.
“That’s something that really inspires me. It’s definitely a long-term goal to work within that space once I’m done playing.”
A Mind for Strategy and the Future
Beyond rugby, Kyle has developed a strong academic interest in strategy and organisational development. His postgraduate research focused on how the Blue Bulls navigated the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I found it fascinating how organisations adapt and find solutions during difficult times. I’d love to work in strategy within the sporting environment, helping unions and organisations overcome challenges and improve systems for players.”
Growth and Personal Values
Still early in his professional career, Kyle remains grounded in his approach, focusing on incremental growth.
“I tend to look at things in six-month periods. Right now, it’s about becoming the best version of myself every day. You never know how long your career will last, so I just want to make the most of every opportunity.”
On the field, his focus is clear. “I’m working on improving my attacking game and my kicking. The goal is to become a more well-rounded player.”
Off the field, he values reflection and connection. “I enjoy spending time alone, reading the Bible and just resetting mentally. I also like creating content with my teammates and spending time with family and friends.”
At the core of everything he does is a deep sense of purpose.
“Everything I do is for my family. Making them proud is one of my biggest motivations. Ultimately, I believe in being happy, because when you’re happy, you have purpose, and achieving your goals becomes more meaningful.”
