Ruben van Heerden’s Rise: Tackles, Faith and Future
The Stormers lock reflects on his recent accolade, the role of faith in his journey, and his hopes for the road ahead.
When Ruben van Heerden was named the Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) Tackle Machine for the 2024/25 season, it was more than just a statistical recognition, it was a quiet nod to years of grit, growth and grace.
The award, which celebrates the best tackler across the URC season, was a proud moment for the Stormers lock. But for Ruben, success on the field is deeply rooted in something far greater than rugby: his unwavering faith, a deep love for the game and an ever-growing affection for the Cape-based franchise he now calls home.
A Journey Sparked by Passion
Ruben’s love for rugby started long before he ever picked up a ball. “My rugby journey started at a young age. I was introduced to the sport and ended up falling in love with it. I watched every single game,” he recalls. “Even though I only started playing in Grade 7 at the age of 13, I always knew I wanted to play rugby professionally.”
The dream may have started late, but it was supported early. Ruben credits his family, especially his parents and brother for the solid foundation they gave him. “My parents were unwavering in their support and my brother, being a great sportsman himself, taught me a lot about conditioning and skills. Every coach I’ve worked with, from school to professional level, contributed something to my growth. No man is an island.”
Finding His Feet in Cape Town
Having played for multiple teams locally and abroad, Ruben describes his time at the Stormers as a period of rediscovery and development.
“I came to the Stormers from the Exeter Chiefs in England and since joining, I’ve really enjoyed my rugby again. It hasn’t always been sunshine and roses, you face challenges everywhere you go but I’ve grown a lot, both on and off the field,” he shares.
Settled in Cape Town, Ruben has found a new appreciation for the Stormers jersey. “Honestly, I never imagined I’d play for the Stormers, but now that I do, I’m incredibly proud. Learning about the union’s history and what it represents has been special. Out of all the unions I’ve played for, this is where I’ve grown and enjoyed myself the most.”
The Tackle Machine
With a remarkable 98% tackle success rate, Ruben earned the title of the URC’s Tackle Machine, a reward that caught him by surprise. “I wasn’t tracking the stats this season, so I only found out about the percentage when I received the award,” he admits with a smile. “Defence is something I pride myself on. It’s personal. If I miss a tackle, I hear about it from my brother” he jokes.
Ruben believes that character is revealed in defence. “Perfection is impossible but I always want to be as close to perfect as possible. I never want to let my team down.”
Interestingly, there wasn’t a shift in training that led to this milestone. “I haven’t changed much; I think it’s just that people are starting to notice. Defence has always been a part of my game.”
As a lock, balancing aggression with technique is key. “Composure is everything. You have to control your emotions and know when to switch on. That control is a skill on its own.”
Anchored in Faith
Throughout his journey, Ruben’s Christian faith has remained his anchor and driving force. “My relationship with Jesus Christ comes first in my life. Everything I do is by the grace and mercy of God. On the field, I try to play for an audience of One,” he shares. “Colossians 3:23 reminds me to work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. That’s how I approach every game.”
Prayer, community and family help keep him grounded. “Before every match, I pray with my dad over the phone. Staying rooted in the Word and prayer is what’s kept me steady. Faith has helped me handle both high-pressure moments and disappointments. It gives me perspective.”
Looking Ahead with Purpose
As for what’s next, Ruben remains humble and focused. “I just want to keep improving my game, stay consistent and enjoy every opportunity that comes my way. I want to control what I can and leave the rest to God.”
While he doesn’t fixate on selection, national team aspirations are part of his vision. “Of course I’d love to represent my country. But I know that starts with playing well week in and week out. I can’t control selections, but I can control my performance.”
He’s also eyeing further development in areas like the line-out. “Calling the line-out and reading the play is something I really want to master. But overall, I’m striving for growth in every aspect, attack, defence, breakdowns. There’s always something to improve.”
Beyond rugby, Ruben sees coaching in his future. “I’d love to stay in the game. I have a heart for mentorship and teaching the next generation.”

Brownies and ice-cream – always the go-to after a game. Definitely something sweet.
Toughest opponent faced?
Kieran Read stands out – I faced him as a youngster in Christchurch playing for the Sharks. He was world-class in every aspect: defence, lineouts, breakdowns, game sense and attack. Scott Barrett and Ardie Savea were also tough.

Bible verse that keeps you going?
Romans 8:28 and Matthew 6:33. Both remind me to stay close to God, keep Him first and trust that everything will fall into place according to His purpose.
Romans 8:28 – “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
