Shaun Williams: A New Chapter in Japan
The journey of a Blitzboks star who now looks to conquer new horizons.
After years of electrifying performances with the South African Sevens team, Shaun Williams is embarking on an exciting new chapter in his rugby career. The 26-year-old has left behind a legacy with the Blitzboks, including key moments like winning a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and numerous accolades in the World Sevens Series. Now, he takes on a new challenge – a move to Japan to play for Akita Northern Bullets in the Top East League.
Reflecting on a Stellar Blitzboks Career
For Shaun, his time with the Blitzboks was marked by unforgettable highs and lows. His debut in 2021, securing Olympic bronze and winning gold at the Commonwealth Games are among his proudest achievements. “Making my debut in 2021 was something I dreamt about my whole life,” Shaun shares. “Then winning bronze at the Paris Olympics and gold at the Commonwealth Games was the cherry on top.”
Having earned 166 points in 90 matches, Shaun’s journey with the Blitzboks was not only about the medals but also about the bonds he formed with teammates. “It’s been a rollercoaster ride,” he says. “I got to play alongside my Blitzbok idols and against players I admire. I’ve made lifelong friendships and memories with them.”
Lessons Learned from Sevens Rugby
Sevens rugby at the highest level taught Shaun invaluable life and rugby lessons. He emphasises the importance of staying active and being coachable, no matter how experienced you are. “Don’t dwell too much on a win or a loss. Sevens is a beautiful sport that gives you another chance in the next game to do better or be humbled,” he explains.
Shaun’s advice to young players is simple: “Always be prepared and never stop learning. You’re never too old or too experienced to learn something new.”
The Move to Japan: A New Challenge
Now in Japan, Shaun is embracing the new adventure with enthusiasm. “I always wanted to play abroad before hanging up my boots, and when the opportunity with Akita Northern Bullets came up, I knew I had to take it,” he says. “Japan is a beautiful country, and I’m excited to experience it firsthand.”
His move marks a return to 15s rugby after years in the sevens format. “It’s a different environment,” he acknowledges. “I haven’t played 15s in a while, so I’m focusing on the basics again. I’ll keep working hard and learning at every opportunity. If I can contribute to the club’s success, I’ll be satisfied.”
Looking Ahead: Growth on and off the Field
At just 26, Shaun still has many years ahead in his rugby career and he’s looking forward to growing as a player in Japan. “I’m focusing on learning to control the game at a higher speed and playing in different conditions,” he says. The fast-paced nature of Japanese rugby is something he’s excited to take on, along with embracing the cultural experience that comes with living in a new country.
“Learning Japanese will be a challenge, but I’m up for it,” he laughs. “I also look forward to experiencing the culture, seeing the Cherry Blossoms and trying new foods. I’m a picky eater, so expanding my palate will be a fun challenge!”
A Heartfelt Farewell
As Shaun leaves the Blitzboks behind, he remains deeply grateful for his time with the team. “Thank you to everyone who was involved in my journey with the Blitzboks,” he says. “Through all the highs and lows, I’ve built incredible memories. I’ll forever cherish the pep talks, the laughs and even the cold ones we shared.”
He leaves a message of encouragement for his teammates and South African fans: “Keep working hard and believe in what we’re doing. For the fans, thank you for your loyal support through both good and bad times. I truly appreciate it.”
While the future remains uncertain, Shaun’s focus is on making the most of his time in Japan and enjoying the journey ahead. “You never know what the future holds,” he reflects. “I’m living in the moment now and excited for what’s to come.”
