MyPlayers’ Danika Groenewald joins the URC Women’s Leadership Academy
MyPlayers’ Administrative Assistant Selected for Prestigious Programme
The MyPlayers team is excited to celebrate an incredible achievement as our very own Danika Groenewald has been selected for the 2025 URC Women’s Leadership Academy. Danika, who joined MyPlayers in June 2023 as an Administrative Assistant, will be one of the few representing South Africa among a global group of 60 women from 17 countries.
This prestigious programme, run by the United Rugby Championship (URC), aims to equip young women with the skills, knowledge and connections to make a meaningful impact in the sports industry.
A Passion for Sport and Player Development
Danika’s journey into the sports sector began unexpectedly when she applied for the role of Administrative Assistant at MyPlayers. However, her love for rugby was ignited long before then, thanks to watching classic Springbok Test matches with her grandfather and late-night Super Rugby games.
While she never imagined working in sports, Danika has embraced every opportunity at MyPlayers, assisting across various departments, with a primary focus on Player Affairs. “I manage so many databases that I’ve started dreaming about Excel sheets and using Google Calendar even in my personal life,” she jokes.
Beyond the spreadsheets, what excites her most about the industry is its power to shape careers. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my role exists because of the power of sport. Sport evolves and so do careers within it, I’m constantly learning and growing,” she says.
A Moment of Surprise and Celebration
Receiving the news of her URC Women’s Leadership Academy selection was an unforgettable moment for Danika. “I was quite nervous while waiting for the results and on the day, I completely missed the email. I only saw it at 22:53, let out an excited squeal and scared my flatmate!” she recalls.
Danika sees this as more than just an opportunity, it’s a stepping stone in her career. “To be chosen among such a diverse and talented group of women is an honour. I can’t wait to connect, learn and challenge myself,” she says.
Empowering Women in Sport
The URC Women’s Leadership Academy focuses on equipping young women with skills, mentorship and networking opportunities in sport. For Danika, the initiative is essential in breaking barriers.
“Women often feel out of place in male-dominated spaces. Initiatives like this show that women belong in sport, not just as supporters but as decision-makers, leaders and change-makers,” she explains.
As part of the programme, Danika will take part in virtual workshops, networking sessions and skill-building activities. She is particularly excited about the opportunity to learn from industry leaders such as Ann Austin (Women’s Tennis Association), Elma Smit (Emmy-nominated sports producer), Marisa Villa (Spanish Professional Football Referee), Michaella Snoeck (Formula 1 Head of Media Rights) and Rene Naylor (former Springbok Physio).
A Bright Future in Sport
Danika’s journey in sport is just beginning and she has big dreams for the future. “In five years, I want to look back and be proud of my achievements. I want to continue learning, expanding my expertise and hopefully grow into a leadership position,” she says.
Her advice to young women wanting to break into the industry? Start where you least expect it.
“There are so many different roles in sport, find your niche, build connections and trust your skills. Don’t sell yourself short. You don’t always have to work in your favourite sport to make a difference in the industry.”
A Message from MyPlayers
The entire MyPlayers team is incredibly proud of Danika and the journey she is about to embark on.
“This is a massive achievement and we have no doubt that Danika will make the most of this opportunity. Her dedication, hard work and passion for player development make her a valuable member of our team and we are excited to see how she grows through this experience,” says Isma-eel Dollie, MyPlayers General Manager of Player Affairs.
Danika’s journey with the URC Women’s Leadership Academy is a testament to her commitment to learning, leadership and making an impact in sport. We wish her all the best and know she will continue to shine.
Congratulations, Danika – go make your mark! 🎉🏉
