A Passion for Rugby and Family Influence
Hlomla Payi’s rugby journey began in an unexpected place, but his path to the field has been shaped by his love for sports and the encouragement of those around him. Growing up in a sporting family, with relatives who played various codes of sport, Hlomla’s initial passion was cricket. However, it wasn’t until his final year of primary school that his teacher, Mr. Totana, introduced him to rugby. “Mr. Totana believed I could add value to his team,” Hlomla recalls. This moment sparked his interest in the game and from there, his journey took off.
His uncle, Lungelo Payi, also played a significant role in Hlomla’s development. Along with the guidance of Mr. Gulwa, who selected him for the Phillip Mtywaku team in high school, Hlomla’s talent quickly became evident. “Through this, I received a bursary to study at Dale College and from that point on, I never looked back,” Hlomla says with pride.

Hlomla’s professional rugby career began in 2021 when he joined the Border Bulldogs after an impressive season with Walter Sisulu University (WSU) in the Varsity Shield. Each year brings new challenges, but I’ve learned a great deal from my coaches and teammates.”
As the youngest player in the squad at the time, Hlomla embraced the opportunity to grow as a player and contribute to the team’s success. His journey with the Bulldogs has been marked by determination and a strong sense of team spirit, which continues to shape his role within the team.
