Sizophila Solontsi: A Late Start, But a Powerful Journey
Getting to Know Sizophila Solontsi – MyPlayers’ New Bulls Daisies Rep
From late-bloomer to double World Cup player and leader off the field, Solontsi continues to break boundaries in women’s rugby.
Sizophila Solontsi didn’t grow up with rugby boots on her feet. In fact, her journey with the sport only began in university.
“My rugby started later in my life, at university to be specific,” she explains. “In 2011, I joined the first ever UKZN Ladies rugby team, hoping to expand my social circle.”
What started as a social outlet quickly evolved. A provincial call-up came in 2012, but clashed with her exams. Still, her passion deepened and by 2013 she began her provincial journey. “That’s what really paved my love for the sport,” she says.
Her big break came in 2018 with a national sevens call-up, and in 2019, she earned her first cap for the Springbok Women’s 15s.
The decision to leave the Sharks, where her rugby roots were planted, wasn’t easy. “It was a hard pill to swallow… but I needed a professional setup,” she says. That need led her to the Bulls Daisies in 2023, a move that has since proved fruitful.
Lifting the Trophy — And the Standard
In 2025, the Bulls Daisies claimed their third consecutive SARU Women’s Premier Division title, a huge milestone for the team and for Solontsi personally.
“For me, it basically means that if people took a chance and invested in women’s rugby, the results would be rewarding,” she says. “For the team, it meant that hard work and sacrifices were worth it, the shortened holidays, moving away from home, the early mornings. All of it.”
Standout Moments & Olympic Dreams
Solontsi has already had a career filled with special moments, from national call-ups to global tournaments.
“Playing in two World Cups — sevens and 15s — back-to-back in 2022 was incredible,” she says. “But being selected for the first-ever South African women’s Olympic team in 2024… that was truly unforgettable.”
Growth of the Game
Women’s rugby in South Africa has come a long way and Solontsi is proud to be part of that wave.
“The game has gained so much exposure. More girls are joining, more sponsors are interested, and national teams are now competing, not just participating,” she says. “The fact that international teams are now contracting South African players is exciting. It gives hope that soon, women can make a full-time living from rugby.”
Leading the Way with MyPlayers
Now, Solontsi takes on a new role as the Bulls Daisies representative for MyPlayers, a responsibility she doesn’t take lightly.
“I’ve been in many leadership structures throughout my career. I believe I can be a voice for players and help grow the women’s game both on and off the field,” she shares.
One of her key goals is to support players academically. “We need to help prepare for life after rugby,” she says. “That’s one area I want to help improve.”
Balancing Books and Boots
Off the field, Solontsi is just as impressive. She holds an Honours degree in Sports Science and a postgraduate certificate in education.
“My passion is in the development phase of education,” she says. “There’s a bigger picture we need to focus on, helping girls understand the game from a younger age, teaching fundamentals and supporting their growth into the sport.”
Overcoming Challenges
From limited facilities to outdated equipment, Solontsi has faced her share of hurdles. But she keeps a grounded perspective.
“You have to accept that women’s rugby is still growing. Our battles are fought on the field with what we have and the off-field stuff is fought by the people behind the scenes,” she says.
“That’s how I’ve overcome the challenges.”
Advice for the Next Generation
Her advice to young girls chasing rugby dreams? “Training sessions are just the framework. The real work happens when no one is watching.”
Looking Ahead
Solontsi is clear about her goals, both as a player and as a rep.
“Another championship would be nice,” she laughs. “And of course, making the World Cup squad in August. Most importantly, staying fit and healthy.”
As for her MyPlayers role, she wants to get even more involved. “I want to help educate more players about what MyPlayers offers. It’s important they know how much support is available to them.”
If She Could Change One Thing?
“More game time and exposure at junior level. That’s where the future starts.”
With quiet determination and bold leadership, Sizophila Solontsi is helping shape the future of women’s rugby, not just by playing the game, but by building it.
